The first words Purple H students are taught to read and write in Year One consist of words from the Dolch Basic Word Lists. To make it fun, I refer to these words as POPCORN Words. Words from this list and the EHSS Core spelling lists make up the spelling words given each week. Students are given three/four or five core words each week starting in week two of each term. They are also given theme related words each week. Activities based on these core and theme words occur during class time. Students in their second and third years of school are also given spelling folders with their own individual spelling words for homework. This can be an extra five words per week.
